After spending time with family, friends, or enjoying peaceful solitude over the holidays, it’s an inspiring time to reflect on relationships. Sacred relationships.
Today, I want to focus on sacred relationships and partnerships. To me, that means unity for longevity.
We know that at the beginning of a relationship, it’s so easy. Everything feels beautiful thanks to the biochemistry of love — dopamine and oxytocin flooding the brain. But what happens as time goes by? What happens after the two-year, twelve-year, and twenty-year mark?
How do we not only maintain, but deepen that connection, that communion and intimacy? When we maintain and deepen the connection, what we’re able to cultivate together is far greater than what we’re capable of doing on our own. We complete the grand design and circuit of divine union.
The Foundation: Your Relationship with Yourself
Consider the nature of your sacred relationships. At what point do you consider the relationship with yourself?
All of our outward relationships — particularly our loving relationships — are based on our relationship with ourselves. These are highly influenced by past experiences that formed patterns that perpetuate in our current lives. The quality of your most intimate relationship is a precise reflection of the quality of your relationship with your own inner life.
How do you change those old patterns that are playing out today? The answer begins with awareness, compassion, and a willingness to look inward with honesty.
5 Practices for Maintaining Sacred Relationships
- Daily check-ins. Take five minutes each day to genuinely ask your partner: “How are you? What do you need from me today?” And then listen — not to respond, but to understand.
- Shared ritual. Create a weekly ritual that belongs only to the two of you — a walk, a meal cooked together, a ceremony of gratitude. Ritual creates the container for sacred connection.
- Regular clearing. Don’t let resentments accumulate. Create a regular practice of honest, loving communication where both partners can express what is arising without blame or judgment.
- Individual wholeness. Paradoxically, the healthiest partnerships are made of two whole individuals — not two halves seeking completion in the other. Your own spiritual practice, your own friendships, your own creative life make you a richer, more present partner.
- Renew your vows — regularly. Not necessarily in a formal ceremony, but in the daily choice to show up, to stay, to choose this person and this relationship. Love is not just a feeling — it is a decision, made again and again.
