Neroli’s Emotional & Spiritual Properties
Neroli’s bright aroma lifts the spirit and speaks to the remembrance of joy and lightheartedness. Neroli is highly beneficial for those who tend to be harsh and critical of themselves and can assist in shifting this energy to that of self-love and compassion. This oil assists in dissolving extreme emotions like jealousy, anger, and self-hatred. It aids in settling shock and counterbalancing PTSD.
Neroli opens the third eye, encouraging a deeper relationship with one’s intuition and inner knowing. It connects us with the mystical dimensions of our nature — the part of us that dreams, that perceives beyond the physical, that communes with the invisible intelligence of love.
Adora’s Encounter with Neroli in Egypt
Although I had encountered neroli early in my studies of aromatherapy, it wasn’t until a journey to Egypt that I truly fell in love with it. In early 2000, my trip to Egypt was entrenched in mysticism. The unique opportunity was to travel to many sacred sites prior to the general opening for ceremony, meditation, and toning.
I stayed at the Mena House at the foot of the Great Pyramid at Giza. The view from my balcony at nightfall was enchanting in the rarest of ways — looking out at one of the most puzzling wonders of the world, fully illuminated with the desert as a backdrop and the sweet aroma of orange blossoms filling the night air. The property had numerous orange trees, and it just so happened to be blooming season.
That scent, combined with the energy of the pyramids and the sacred work we were doing, created an experience that lives permanently in my cellular memory. Since that journey, neroli has been one of my most beloved and frequently used essential oils.
How to Work with Neroli
- For self-criticism and harsh inner dialogue: Apply one drop diluted to your heart center each morning. Breathe deeply and speak: “I am worthy of my own compassion.”
- For grief and emotional shock: Diffuse 3–4 drops of neroli in your space. Its frequency meets you in the tender places and gently lifts.
- For third eye awakening: Apply a tiny diluted amount to your third eye (between and slightly above the eyebrows) before meditation. Notice what opens.
